At Knights Elementary, we are gifted with the presence of many Latino/Latina students from the surrounding area. The rural countryside is home to many Hispanic workers who harvest fruits and vegetables during different seasons. In the reading for this week (Rothstein & Trumbull Ch. 1, 2), it mentioned how students from foreign countries are brought up to be more family oriented and aware of how to operate within a group more readily and politely. Students from such families hold cultural values and beliefs that may be different from their Western European classmates'. Where they struggle in some academic areas, they could shine in leadership role positions within small group activities. (#FEAP2d) Their potential know-how in group mechanics could let them practice language skills in different scenarios. Reader's Theater, Partner Reading groups, Science oriented group work, and many more instructional methods would be perfect for a student who comes from a group-minded home. Home life is the basis for many classroom management techniques. If the students have a purpose for what they are doing, and feeling like they are helping out, they feel good about themselves and where they are. At home, they are positively reinforced for helping the family unit. At school, it should be the same. I remember Alberto (pseudonym) getting to pick a toy out of the treasure box for good behavior and having the biggest smile on his face. (#FEAP2b) (Classroom Management)

What a great way to build comunity. Our "westernized" individualist students can help guide our collectivist students and our collectivist students can help the classroom learn to work as a team. Each culture has something important to contribute in creating their classroom community.
